I used to say I wanted my own business while growing up, but I really knew it was writing that (and copywriting) made me happiest. I love to watch words become sentences and sentences evolve into stories. That's what good copy do! Everyone has a story to tell, and whether it is about your product or your business, it is my job to let it come alive.
I graduated from high school with a pack of journals, short stories, and poems under my arm.
Because writing was not a 'real' job, I went on to university to study Industrial Psychology, business, and marketing. I emerged with a master's degree in Industrial Psychology and worked in the formal sector for about five years.
I then had an idea for a T-shirt company for kids - boasting cute and nostalgic Afrikaans words and poems on their chests. It was a hit with moms and grandmas and snowballed. I sold the business after three years for a tidy profit.
Fast forward a few years, a few kids, and a few other projects later. Finally, I returned to copywriting full-time as a freelancer. Writing good copy is now my real job, but I needed the university of life to come the full circle.
